lost Dear Thirumeni, We have lost our father from disease and ill health. He was a good man but domineered by my mother. He had dared not go against her wishes and when he did he faced much trouble in the marriage. There was love between my parents but my mother high and almighty attitude and my father's traditional approaches created much disharmony in the family between them and their children also. My mother favours the eldest son and the balance of the children do not meet my mothers standards and status requirements. We are still in disharmony with her upon the death of my father. She is so proud that she doesn't ask us for any help. She would rather go to her church friends and other friends requesting assistance, so that she can show that her children arn't caring for her. I am very sad to see that my relationship with my mother is pretty sour. We have always had difficulties and this seems to deepen now without my father here to buffer. She doesn't call and lives alone in a big city. She has never asked me to stay with her due to her pride. If we stay with her, it would lead to feud. She would rather have one of her son's stay with her, but everyone is busy with their own lives. She will overcompensate to make her son's happy. I am very concerned over her overly independent attitude and yet sometimes dependent approach with others. I will be happy to assist her. I worry a lot about her. When we do get along and get close, something always happens to dampen the relationship. She always finds someone better than me and relies on them to show me up. When I offer her help she declines. I get tired of offering, which includes asking her to be part of any celebrations or good times we have. She thinks that my status is not high enough for her. She refuses to come to my home as it is not meeting to her standards. Please thirumeni help my mother see the light and what really should be important things in life. My father has passed away and yet she conveniently holds to certain traditions. She is socially active but she doesn't recognize that we children and the grandchildren miss my father. Concerned Dear Parumala Thirumeni, Please pray for all families, especially women from our Malayalee community who are facing family and marital probelms. Our culture is such that we do not value the opinions, feelings and needs of our girls, young women, sisters, wifes and mothers. We take for granted their love, their work, their commitment and their caring for others. We socialize our women as if they are merely property to hand over to someone else when the family of origins turn is over. Our women never really feel they are part of anything. We are considered as merchandise which carry a liability and which depreciate after a certain age in many of our families of origin. We are encourage and expected to marry to reduce the liability on families of origin and then transferred to the families that we marry into. Many time those families only value us based on the goods we bring, which include our dowries, our education, our culinary and housekeeping skills. Our intelligence, wit, feelings, sensitivities, our work, is not valued. The man of the home is more important which incuded the male children we bare. We ourselves have so much internerlized bias toward our male children and male family members that we as women also forget how we devalue our female children and women in our community, as we are socialized this way and we play a role in the socialization of our children to think this way. Even after we get married as daughter our own family does not value and show love to our children the same way as our brother's children. Our own children then internalize their experiences and propogates this type of behaviour in their own lives to feel that they belong. This cycle of separation and differentiation, and devaluing our girl children and women has to stop. The church needs to educate families. Girl children and women has to have a place in the church and a place in the church to express themselves and be valued irregardless of our gender. We are not truly members of our church except through our fathers and husbands. We have so much strength and richness in our culture and in our church but the way we treat our women is not something that I feel proud of.
